Hoboken High School celebrates a Day of STEAM
Hoboken HS celebrates its 4th annual Day of STEAM with the entire Hoboken Public School District
Hoboken, NJ, March 29, 2021— Hoboken High School celebrated its fourth Day of STEAM, virtual style, on March 20, 2021. The usual creative in-person event could not take place as a result of COVID-19. Therefore, the High School staff and students did the next best thing - the Day of STEAM was brought to district families via videos, kits, and live-streamed content from the New Jersey Makers Day organization. Organizers of the event include library media specialist Mrs. McGreivey, theater teacher Ms. Miller, and Project Lead the Way teachers Mr. Lebegue, Mr. Thomas and Mr. WIlliams.
The Hoboken HS STEM Team considered all the things we normally do and ruled out those that were impractical to package, like ingredients for slime. We inventoried available supplies in our school and also other district schools (thanks for all those glue sticks!). Three kits were created for distribution: “Make a Cell,” Make a Tiny Book,” and “Make a Creature.” Mrs. McGreivey created a Google Site to host our content and a Google Form so parents could request kits. Students planned and produced videos of how to use the kits. Our students also packaged and labeled the kits. Over 150 kits were requested and were delivered to students in our K-5 schools.
In addition, Ms. Miller drew on her vast library of theater activity videos to find just the right ones to get families engaged in drama and movement at home.
Hoboken HS’s Day of STEAM started small in 2018 as a Makers Day event that followed a Theater Day event. The two worked together really well, so we maintained that format and even added in an art show last year to make it truly a Day of STEAM.
Each year, more than 80,000 residents in New Jersey come together at hundreds of public, school, and academic libraries throughout the state for New Jersey Makers Day, an annual celebration of STEM and maker culture.
